Hello Elgin Street Families,

It’s hard to believe that November is just around the corner and we are still enjoying beautiful weather here at Elgin Street. We have been busy the first two months of this school year! Students have been engaged in lots of learning activities and enjoying their time together. We have been very fortunate to use some of our Charity Bingo funds to purchase recess equipment for our students to use during their breaks. We are also very thankful to be able to use our Charity Bingo funds for purchasing some of our online resources such as: RazKids, Je Lis and Dreambox.

We are excited to share some of our upcoming projects, events and activities. First, we have started extra-curricular activities at the school. Students are enjoying the opportunity to play some organized sports and sing in the choir. Next, student photo proofs have gone home and we will be offering a retake day on November 13th in the afternoon. We are also preparing for the installation of a new Core Board in our ACE class outdoor play area. This Core Board will support communication skills for our students. Finally, our Elgin Street Eagles are going to learn all about Lacrosse from the Spartan Lacrosse Academy on November 4th and 5th.

A big thank you to the School Council for organizing a number of community events over the next 2 months. First, the Scholastic Book Fair has arrived at Elgin Street this week for students to visit. There is also an opportunity for families to visit on Wednesday after school from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Next, the School Council will be hosting a Movie Night and Community Closet on November 21, 2024. Families can enjoy an evening of watching The Night at the Museum and picking up some gently used clothing for our ever growing Eagles. Finally, the School Council is in the process of organizing a Vendor’s Fair in early December. There will be more information to come about this event.

Our staff has been focusing on Structured Literacy for our School Learning Improvement Plan for the past 2 years. We are happy to share that we have closed the gap in literacy skills and will continue to do so. This year, our staff’s main focus will be on Math Instruction and closing the gap in Math skills. Our board is supporting this initiative by purchasing two invaluable online Math resources called Knowledgehook and Reflex. Consider asking your child what they did in Math class today.

We wanted to give you a snapshot of the weeks ahead and a reminder of where you can locate future info.
