Dear Parents/Guardians:

The month of June is pride month. Canada’s first-ever Pride Month launched on June 1, 2016. A flag was raised on Parliament Hill for the first time. Similar events took place at Queen’s Park and city halls across the country. This year, all WRDSB schools will be raising the Pride flag during the month of June.

Many of our WRDSB staff, students and parents/guardians and community members identify as members of the Rainbow (or LGBTQ+) community. We believe that our schools are safe spaces for everyone that walks through our front doors. Our new strategic plan emphasizes that the well-being for all of our students and staff are met through a focus of inclusion. We have several policies and procedures in place that speak to our commitment to equity and inclusion. Raising the Pride flag demonstrates this commitment to our students, staff, parents and caregivers and community members.

We know that those who identify as LGBTQ+ are at higher risk for experiencing bullying and harassment. Our school board will not tolerate this kind of behavior. We will continue to create inclusive and safe spaces for anyone who enters any of our schools or buildings.

Thank you for supporting our safe, caring and inclusive school and community.

Sincerely,

Ms. Bowker, Principal      Mrs. Williams, Vice-Principal      Mr. Pomfret, Acting Vice-Principal
